Artist Statement

As a creative, I create to capture the scope of my vivid imagination and the conceptualization of the black woman's  creative identity and contribution within society. I want my works to bring to life these women and give voice to their humanity and the silent and invisible nature imposed upon their existence throughout culture.  Further, the multi-dimensional and multi media portraits I create provide the elements for a different discourse within the black female subjectivity.

Incorporating a distinct set of cultural references, symbols and iconography to express the collective shared experiences of black womenhood, I create new constructs to challenge the conventional and sterotypical notions of our idenity to reveal the veil of mystifying mystique and powerfulness that is silenced and discounted.  In my collages, I visualize the narratives of black women. These stories then allow me to release and give birth my many visions and versions  black womaness whose stories provide compelling narratives that underscores their individual and unique complexities.

My passion for collage developed out of a need and place for healing.  It was a way to connect with my own inner intuition while seeking strength and resilience to overcome depression.  In my discovery, I found a sort of meditation in the blind appropriation, the wild flipping through pages, collecting the delicate fragments of ideas, pasting them together.  A wilderness of pieces of things said and expressed again. Collage is my way to document and navigate such a wilderness among the womanhood, motherhood and sisterhood intersect.
